PIERRE PÉTERS

Pierre Péters

Les Chetillons, L'Etonnant Monsieur Victor & Oenotheque are only sold through our newsletter!

Pierre Péters is one of the absolute top winemakers of the Côte des Blancs. The champagnes are pure, straightforward, mineral, complex and elegant. The single-vineyard champagne Les Chétillons is particularly famous.

The Péters family dates back to 1840, when Gaspard Péters came from Luxembourg to Le Mesnil-sur-Oger to marry into the Doué family. Camille Péters started growing grapes in 1919, and his son Pierre first released champagne under his own name in 1947. In 1967, son François took over, contributing significantly to the growth and fame, especially in the USA and Scandinavia, and since 2007, his son Rodolphe has been in charge.

90 percent of the vineyards are located in the Grand Cru area of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Oger, Avize and Cramant, some parcels are on the Côte des Bar. Only Chardonnay is grown. The viticulture is close to nature, but without certification. Since 2000, an enormous amount has been invested in the cellar equipment. The centrepiece is the pneumatic press, which can be controlled extremely granularly and with which the grape juice is pressed extremely slowly - for Rodolphe one of the key parameters for high quality.

All base wines are matured in steel tanks to preserve the natural character of the Chardonnay fruit and undergo malolactic fermentation. Yields are not too low, "if the concentration is too high, finesse is lost," says Rodolphe.

In recent years, there has been an exciting cooperation with his son Victor, who has designed his own label series and created a cuvée with Rodolphe that bears his name. In addition, a new champagne, Cuvée Spéciale Les Montjolys, was created from seven parcels of the famous single vineyard Les Chétillons in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger.

Facts: Le Mesnil-sur-Oger, Côte des Blancs, 20 ha, 180,000 bottles/year, 100% Chardonnay, 100% ageing in steel, 100% malolactic fermentation.
