In the 1960s, Jean Velut was forced to give up his farmland near Troyes and reorient himself. In hindsight, however, this painful decision can only be described as a stroke of luck, as the Veluts still cultivated some land in the world-famous village of Montgueux, which is known today for its Chardonnay due to its very chalky soil.
It was Jean's son, Denis, who was committed to marketing champagne under his own label from 1976, making him one of the pioneers in this region. His son Benoit is now at the helm. The base wines are matured, strictly separated by parcel, mostly in stainless steel. As a rule, malolactic fermentation is not stopped. The proportion of reserve wines is exceptionally high. The ageing on the lees after traditional bottle fermentation is between two and eight years.
The cuvées are characterised by the typically ripe and full-bodied grape material from Montgueux and fine brioche notes as a result of the extended contact with the lees, which is complemented by a clear minerality. Despite low dosages in some cases, Jean Velut's champagnes are truly warm-hearted and extremely engaging proof that there is a great deal to discover in Champagne off the beaten track!
