Biodynamic Aube winemaker with extremely strong character, idiosyncratic but also very drinkable champagnes at a young age. Fermentation with the vineyard's own yeasts (spontaneous fermentation), aging in steel and used wood. The malolactic fermentation is not stopped. Bottling without fining and filtration.
Two are really living their dream and they are completely uncompromising. The former English teachers Bénédicte Ruppert and Emmanuel Leroy built a wooden house on their parents' property (they bought it in the 1970s and worked there first as shepherds and later as winemakers) in which they live with their three children and a pack of dogs. A real log cabin! On the huge area there are also stables with horses, cows, pigs, chickens and so on. The entire biodynamic process is lived here: you make the hay, the fertilizer, farm with horses, etc. That is an incredible amount of work!
However, both appear extremely satisfied which is probably due to the large amount of physical activity outdoors. The company has also been Demeter certified since 2014.
The difference to the vineyards in the immediate vicinity immediately catches the observer's eye: At Ruppert-Leroy you can eat many wild herbs straight from the ground, it smells and buzzes. In the vineyard opposite everything is dead and brown, not a green stalk protrudes from the soil, it looks as if it has been concreted over.
With the two organic farmers, the vines live in a vital environment and on healthy soil, they grow better, more diverse and more natural nutrients - this has to result in a better, special, even more lively champagne!
And so the wines of this company bristle with strength of character and individuality. They are spicy, herbal, deep in color and yet appear polished and balanced.
Champagne whose natural beauty quickly captivates you if you are open to or just off the beaten path.
