Cumières

Cumières is a French village with around 750 inhabitants, located in the Champagne region within the Marne Valley, on the right bank of the Marne River, between Dizy and Damery, just below Hautvillers.

The vineyards of Cumières, covering approximately 170 hectares, are situated on south-facing slopes directly overlooking the Marne River, creating exceptionally favorable conditions for viticulture.

Around 55% of the vineyard area is planted with Pinot Noir, 25% with Pinot Meunier, and 20% with Chardonnay.

Historically, Cumières was primarily a Pinot Meunier village. However, over the past decades, many growers have increasingly chosen to plant Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, as these grape varieties are often perceived as more prestigious.

That Pinot Meunier can achieve the highest quality levels is demonstrated by producers such as René Geoffroy and Georges Laval, whose internationally acclaimed Champagne cuvées and single-vineyard Champagnes are, in some cases, made entirely from Pinot Meunier.

Most of Champagne Geoffroy’s vineyards are located in Cumières, although the winery and cellars have been based in Aÿ for several years. Few producers offer such a diverse and high-quality portfolio. Highlights include a single-vineyard Meunier, a traditional field blend, a Rosé Champagne produced through co-fermentation of red and white grapes, and the intensely concentrated Terre Millésime, which benefits from ten years of bottle aging. Alongside these prestige wines, Geoffroy also produces a range of highly drinkable and characterful Champagnes, making for an exceptionally well-rounded portfolio.

Champagne Georges Laval is regarded as one of the pioneers of biodynamic viticulture in Champagne and remains one of the region’s smallest grower-producers. Today, his son Vincent Laval manages approximately two hectares of vineyards in Cumières. Most of his wines are produced as single-varietal Pinot Meunier Champagnes, complemented by a single-vineyard Chardonnay called Les Chênes and a single-vineyard Pinot Noir known as Les Hautes Chèvres. His latest release is the highly sought-after Les Longues Violes, another prestigious single-vineyard Pinot Noir Champagne.

Cumières Rouge

Cumières is one of the few villages in Champagne with a longstanding tradition of producing high-quality red wines. These wines are commonly referred to as Cumières Rouge, while the official designation for still wines from Champagne is Coteaux Champenois (either Rouge or Blanc). Many growers from the Côte des Blancs source red wine from Cumières to create their Rosé Champagne blends.
