Avenay Val d´Or

22.05.2025
Nur etwa drei Kilometer nordwestlich von Aÿ liegt die kleine Ortschaft Avenay Val d’Or.

Located just three kilometers northwest of Aÿ, the small Champagne village of Avenay Val d’Or boasts a long and fascinating history. Today home to around 1,000 inhabitants, the village traces its origins back to ancient times, with archaeological excavations revealing traces of Roman settlements. Around the year 660, Saint Bertha of Avenay founded the Abbey of Saint-Pierre here. According to legend, Saint Peter revealed a spring to her during a period of drought, ensuring the abbey’s water supply. In reality, a canal was likely constructed during that era to improve water access. The village officially adopted the name Val d’Or (“Golden Valley”) in 1951, possibly inspired by this very legend.

Avenay Val d’Or is part of the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park, one of the most important landscapes in the Champagne region. Nearly 240 hectares of vineyards, representing roughly 25% of the commune’s surface area, are planted with vines. Thanks to their exceptional terroir, the vineyards of Avenay Val d’Or are classified as Premier Cru Champagne vineyards.

The vineyards are bordered to the north by the forests of the Montagne de Reims, while gently sloping southward toward the small river Livre. This hillside location ensures excellent water drainage, while the surrounding forests provide cooling air currents that favor the development of fresh acidity and elegance in the wines. Combined with the vineyards’ ideal southern exposure, the grapes are able to achieve optimal ripeness.

Despite its geographical proximity to the Montagne de Reims, Avenay Val d’Or officially belongs to the Vallée de la Marne, more precisely to the subregion known as the Grande Vallée de la Marne, which forms the eastern end of the Marne Valley. Unlike much of the greater Marne Valley, where Meunier dominates, the Grande Vallée is characterized by Pinot Noir, due to the region’s higher limestone content.

Today, approximately 78% of the vineyards in Avenay Val d’Or are planted with Pinot Noir, followed by Chardonnay at 12% and Meunier at 10%. The fact that prestigious Champagne houses such as Bollinger and Philipponnat source grapes from Avenay Val d’Or demonstrates the village’s high quality potential, even if its name remains less internationally known than neighboring Aÿ Champagne.
