Aÿ
Aÿ is located approximately 28 kilometers south of Reims, within the Montagne de Reims Regional Natural Park, making it an integral part of the prestigious Grande Vallée de la Marne wine-growing area in Champagne.
The village boasts more than 360 hectares of Grand Cru vineyards, all classified as Grand Cru. The terroir is heavily influenced by chalk-rich soils and predominantly south-facing vineyard sites, providing ideal conditions for the cultivation of exceptional grapes.
Thanks to the opening of the Marne Valley near Aÿ towards the vast Champagne plain, the local microclimate is drier than in many other wine-growing villages in the region. The influence of this unique Champagne terroir is clearly reflected in the wines: Aÿ Champagne is renowned for producing powerful, expressive, and aromatic Champagnes that retain remarkable freshness and vibrant acidity.
Pinot Noir is by far the dominant grape variety in Aÿ, accounting for approximately 90% of the vineyard area. Chardonnay represents around 8%, while Pinot Meunier occupies only a small proportion of the vineyards.
Compared to neighboring Grand Cru villages such as Ambonnay and Bouzy—often regarded as Aÿ’s main rivals for producing the most powerful Pinot Noir in Champagne—the Pinot Noir vineyards of Aÿ are situated at slightly lower elevations. As a result, they benefit from somewhat warmer growing conditions, contributing to the richness, depth, and generosity that characterize Aÿ wines.
It is therefore no surprise to wine connoisseurs that Aÿ is one of the very few villages in Champagne where the production of high-quality red still wines is not only possible but actively practiced.
Aÿ is home to several renowned Champagne houses, further emphasizing its importance within the region. Its significance is reinforced by the presence of the prestigious Institut International des Vins de Champagne, headquartered in the historic Villa Bissinger.
From a historical perspective, the importance of Aÿ can hardly be overstated. Since the 17th century, the village has been widely regarded as one of the most distinguished centers of Champagne production and home to some of the region’s finest winegrowers. Extensive underground cellars, capable of storing millions of bottles, stand as impressive testimony to this remarkable heritage and enduring legacy.
