Simon Rion

In the small village of Courmas, Simon Rion is a fourth-generation wine grower, but the first in his family to bottle his own champagne. Simon has been in charge of the domaine since 2007 and has been practising conventional viticulture for a long time. However, with time and experience, his desire to produce more terroir-driven and sustainable champagnes grew, so he has refrained from using pesticides and herbicides since 2017 and is now on the path to organic certification.

The village of Courmas is located in the Montagne de Reims, but southwest of Reims towards the Marne Valley, where the soils are heavier due to a higher clay content. Of his 2.15 hectares, 1.2 hectares are planted with Meunier, followed by Pinot Noir and a small amount of Chardonnay.

Most of his champagnes are matured in stainless steel and concrete tanks and all undergo long yeast ageing and low dosage. For a recent project, the single-vineyard champagnes of the ‘Larmes’ range, he skilfully vinifies in barrique barrels. Simon would like to experiment more in this direction in the future.

The style of his champagnes is accessible overall, but at the same time very distinctive, spicy and smooth, balanced between maturity and freshness, body and precision. We are excited to see where his journey takes him!
