Françoise Bedel et Fils

Francoise Bedel's path to biodynamic wine making was a long and winding one. For years she limited herself to merely cultivating the grapes and selling her fruit. Then as part of her journey for greater professional sense and spirituality, she familiarized herself with bio-dynamic cultivation methods. 1998 — over 15 years after the journey began — she applied her first bio-dynamic cultivation practices to 2 hectares. One year later, she transitioned her entire cultivation efforts and earned certification (Ecocert).

The focus for Bedel is always on the final result: she sees the bio-dynamic principles as lending her wines a more obvious structure, drawing out the nuances of flavor, and creating a connection between the consumer and the consumed. Terroir also now has a significantly clearer voice in her champagnes.

As is typical for the town of Crouttes-sur-Marne, Pinot Meunier is grown in a high percentage of Bedel's parcels, with the remaining plots divided between Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Vinification is performed in stainless steel or enamel tanks. The wines generally enjoy extended lee contact. The non-vintage cuvee Origin'Elle is matured for 6 years and shows a decidedly yeasty character, with a distinct personality and a strong expression of Marne's soils.
