NEW and in cooperation with the well-regarded Pinot wine store from Nuremberg, Champagne Characters is proud to offer this extremely rare champagne (only approx. 15,000 bottles/year): Champagne Fernand Thill of Verzy.
What a discovery! Following a visit in L'Assiette Champenoise (*** Michelin stars!), a good friend couldn't stop raving to us about a by-the-glass champagne he had tasted there. We followed up immediately and learned that Anselme Selosse himself carries this champagne in his hotel.
And after trying it ourselves, the answer was immediately clear: A laser focus with an edgy tension, sophisticated elegance and an exceptionally airy structure, the likes of which we have never before experienced.(The village of Verzy, like Ambonnay, is one of the very few crus that has Grand Cru status for both Pinot Noir and Chardonnay).
The Brut and Rosé Brut are powerful, gripping champagnes — while simultaneously maintaining their vinosity and nuanced structure.
They are serious, sensationally academic and precise, and offer a true value for the price as well. Perhaps it is because of, rather than in spite of, this philosophic nature that we believe this is a wine capable of being enjoyed every day.
There is absolutely no better deal than the Millesimés!
The 2008 cuvee produced using 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay has the power and acid backbone for which that cool vintage is known. The expressiveness and strong vinosity make it the perfect pairing with simple, hearty dishes: wonderfully lively and fresh, juicy and long in the finish.
The Blanc de Blancs 2007 Grand Cru is competing for space in the top ranks of grower champagnes, especially at this price. Taken as a whole, there's nothing else like it in our program:
Despite a fine and near weightless mineral tension, the nose delights the senses with the delicate and silken notes of spring. Sleek and graceful, the wine crosses the tongue in tight, airy pirouettes before slipping down the throat into an unforgettable finish rich with notes of white flowers, pears, hawthorn, rapeseed and lilacs. Grace and elegance, light and subtle — in a word: sen-sa-tion-al!
